Bamboos are legendary for their extremely fast growth rates-but they do it in fits and starts.
Bamboos have a season. Clumping bamboos start shooting in spring and tend to go dormant during the winter-however young plants will often grow all year through if the conditions are right.
Bamboos are gross feeders. They are giant grass and they like giant amounts of fertiliser. Organic fertilisers like chook manure work well. They do best if they have good drainage. They also benefit from heavy applications of mulch, particularly when they are young. They grow to maturity in about 7-8 years.
Large plants will usually give the fastest results, so if you want a hedge fast, you will be well served by buying large pots or bags of bamboo-of course these will be more expensive. A standard 200 mm pot will still give great results if the conditions are right.
Bamboos are semi deciduous plants And as they clump up they will become self mulching.
Ideal plant spacings vary from species to species, with large plants understandably requiring more space. Spacing for a 20 m plant is usually about 5-6 metres apart. Smaller hedging bamboos can be planted 3-4 metres apart. If they are planted too close together they will not reach full potential. |
